The Jewish Community Council of Greater Washington has sent a mailgram to the Washington area’s Senators and Congressmen declaring that the break down in the Israeli-Egyptian negotiations “in the face of Israel’s flexibility demands an even closer relationship between Israel and the United States in an effort to continue pressing for peace, security and democracy in the. region.”
“Israel,” the message said, “has clearly demonstrated in good faith a willingness to take great risks for peace in the Middle East,” It urged the Congressmen “to maintain strong military and economic support for Israel and to publicly express that support.”
In announcing the message, the Council said “It is essential that Congressmen and Senators, opinion leaders and media be forcefully informed that the blame for the failure in negotiations lies with Egypt, Contrary to events of the last several weeks,” the Council said, “initial media reports indicated Israel’s ‘intransigence’ to be the cause of the breakdown, Although later reports do not support these initial claims, the damage of misinformation has been done.”
