The Canadian Government cannot insist on Egyptian agreement that the Suez Canal be kept open to the shipping of all nations as a condition for loaning the United Nations $1, 000, 000 toward the cost of clearing the Canal of sunken ships, the Canadian Government declared this week-end.
Speaking in Parliament during the debate on the loan, which was later approved, Minister of Finance Walter E. Harris rejected proposals from the opposition demanding prior agreement from President Nasser of Egypt on future Suez Canal policy. However, Mr. Harris pledged that Canada would urge that in the negotiations between the United Nations and Egypt one outcome be freedom of passage through the waterway.
