Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent announced in Parliament yesterday that lifting of the temporary ban on arms shipments to the Middle East imposed by his government several weeks ago pending a debate in Parliament.
The removal of the ban cleared for immediate shipment to Egypt the remaining 12 Harvard trainer planes of a 15-plane order approved months ago. It also cleared for shipment to Israel some $30,000 worth of artillery ammunition. Each order will be judged on its own merits in the future, the Prime Minister indicated.
Earlier, addressing a crowded Commons, visiting British Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden said that Israel and the Arab states had to achieve peace through “compromise.” Such a peace settlement, he added, “can only be realized if both sides are prepared to reconcile the positions they have taken up to now.” Reporting on the recent talks in Washington between President Eisenhower and himself, Sir Anthony said that the two principals had decided to work for a Palestine settlement “without publicity.”
