Maurice Duplessis, former premier of Quebec and present leader of the Union Nationals party, was accused this week of spreading false rumors with the intention of harming the petition now being circulated in Canada on behalf of the Jewish refugees.
The accusation was made by Rev. C. E. Silcox of Toronto, director of the Canadian Conference of Christians and Jews, who spoke at services in which four Christian congregations as well as members of Cornwall’s Jewish community participated. He referred to the statement made a week ago by Mr. Duplessis to the effect “that a Zionist group was conspiring to flood Quebec farms with 100,000 Jewish refugees from central Europe.”
