“It would be a tragedy and a crime if the rulers of Communist Russia were now planning to revive this dark and evil force from the past–the unbridled anti-Semitism of Nazi Germany–and to make use of it for their own ends,” Lester B. Pearson, Canada’s Secretary of State for External Affairs, stated at a session of parliament.

Mr. Pearson stated that “the ominous and familiar pattern which seems to be developing within the Soviet world is a matter which must ve viewed with deepest anxiety,” particularly by Jews in Canada and elsewhere. The Minister spoke in reply to a question by the Jewish member, David Croll, who asked, “Can the Secretary of State for External Affairs enlighten the House on the implications of recent signs of growing anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union and the satellite countries of eastern Europe?”
