M.M. Shafir, Canadian Yiddish poet, was awarded a $2,500 grant today by the Canada Council, of Ottawa, to enable him to complete a fourth volume of his verse. The Council recently adopted a new policy of aiding literature written in Canada in languages other than English and French. The Council is a Government body to foster and promote the study of the arts and social sciences. Mr. Shafir has heretofore published three books of Yiddish verse. He had received grants previously from the Jewish PEN Club, of New York, and the Zvi Kessel Award in Mexico City.
