The Sonato Committee on Human Rights board a briof prosented by the Canadian Jewish Congress asking for the establishment of a civil rights section within the Justice Department and for the setting up of a permanent parliamentary committee on human rights.

Senator J.J. Kinley wanted to know whether there was any evidence of discrimination in Canada against Jews. Saul Hayes of Montreal, national director of the Congress, replied that there was a certain amount, particularly in employment. It was the policy of some large Canadian firms to discriminate against Jews when sooking employees, he said. Other minority groups had run up against the same problem, he added, noting that there were companies in parts of Ontaric which would not employ French-Canadians. "Our desire for fair employment practices applies to all–it is for French-Canadians as well as for Jews," he stated.
