Canadian Jewry is spending tremendous sums for the erection of community centers, with new Y.M.H.A. buildings figuring prominently in the construction program, it was revealed in a survey made public here today.
The new Y.M.H.A. Community Center in Toronto, which will be ready for use by November 1951, will be the most modern of its kind in America, featuring a 700-seat auditorium, gymnasium, swimming pool and athletic fields. The new center will cost more than $1,500,000. A new Y.M.H.A. building, built at a cost of $1,500,000, was recently dedicated in Montreal.
Winnipeg’s new Y.M.H.A. Community Center is now under construction and the modern building is expected to cost in the neighborhood of $600,000. It will also have a 500-seat auditorium. The Jewish community of Hamilton recently opened a new center which has been named in memory of the late Jacob N. Goldblatt, humanitarian, philanthropist and for a great many years the leader of the Jewish community in that city. The center was built at a cost of $285,000. Synagogue centers are being built in a number of the smaller communities.
