The overall effect of a recent decision by the Canadian Supreme Court ruling a civic by-law invalid when it interferes with the exercise of freedom of religion, was underlined here by the Canadian Jewish Congress which has publicized the decision. The ruling was hailed by leading Canadian newspapers.

The case involved an appeal by a member of the sect of Jehovah’s Witnesses who was arrested in Quebec for distributing religious tracts published by the sect, without having first obtained a permit. The court, in a five to four decision, upheld the appeal, although it did not abrogate the 20-year-old Quebec statute.
