An expression of hope that trade relations between Israel and Canada would increase to the benefit of both nations was made here today in a statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency by Gordon Churchill, Canadian Minister of Trade and Commerce.
Israel’s economic accomplishments to date are “impressive, ” the Minister noted, listing among them the doubling of the gross national product between 1949 and 1957 and the tripling of agricultural output in the same period. Of the nearly $80, 000, 000 of Canadian exports to Israel since the Jewish State was created, half was in wheat and the remainder chiefly in canned meat, aluminum, asbestos, lumber, paper, chemicals and drugs. Canada purchased some $90, 000, 000 worth of polished industrial diamonds, citrus products, plywood, olive oil and other Israeli products.
