Governor-General Roland Michener has named two Canadian Jewish personalities to receive New Year’s honors.
Samuel Bronfman, vice-president of the World Jewish Congress and chairman of the board of governors of the Canadian Jewish Congress, was one of 15 Canadians named as Companion of the Order of Canada, the Commonwealth’s highest distinction. The citation was “in recognition of long and distinguished public service.” Mr. Bronfman, a leading industrialism and philanthropist, was for more than 25 years president of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
The Governor-General also named Mrs. Nina Cohen, of Sydney, Nova Scotia, former president of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO, the women’s Zionist organization, to receive the Medal of Service.
Both awards were introduced last year by Prime Minister Lester Pearson’s government to reward and recognize Canadians who have served their country with distinction.
