A resolution aimed at ending shechita, Jewish ritual slaughter of food animals, has been introduced in the Canadian Parliament by J A. McBain.
The resolution, which would place the government on record as favoring legislation to ensure humane slaughter, is a private member’s bill and is unlikely to receive government support. As a matter of fact, since the Jewish community is prepared to battle the resolution it is highly unlikely that the government will even allow it to reach the floor of this extremely busy session. The community does not expect any major drive against shechita at this time.
