The Fifth Annual Keren Hayesod campaign in Canada was launched last night at a dinner at the Mount Royal Hotel, Montreal’s quota is $100,000. Dr. Chaim Weizmann and Sir Wyndham Deedes were the guests of honor.

Subscriptions exceeding $40,000 were pledged by the four hundred guests who assembled to hear the addresses of Dr. Weizmann and Sir Wyndham Deedes and to receive the report of A. J. Freiman, president of the Canadian Zionists who recently returned from Palestine.

Dr. Weizmann was greeted by an ovation when he rose to speak. He said Palestine has passed the experimental stage. “There is no place in Palestine for landlords and millionaires, but only for modest clean living Jews. In twenty-five years there will be a Jewish population in Palestine of half a million.

“We here have given much to Palestine. We have given money, but there they have given flesh and blood. We have the man power there to cover the whole gamut of human work. Those behind the lines should supply them with the necessary means,” he declared.

Sir Wyndham Deedes compared the upbuilding of Palestine to the erection of a house. “The foundations are well laid,” he declared. “But the passerby must not say that the Jews started to build and could not complete the structure.”

Describing his impressions on his recent visit, Mr. Freiman urged that more and more land should be purchased in the country.
