Canadian Zionists Start Campaign for $500,000, Raise $75,000 at Opening Banquet

The United Palestine Appeal in Canada, which will seek to raise $500,000, was launched Sunday night at a banquet at the Windsor Hotel.

A large and enthusiastic gathering witnessed the raising of $75,000 within an hour, many persons present doubling and tripling their usual subscriptions. Canadian Zionists have undertaken to redeem 50,000 dunams of land in the plain of Sharon.

Montreal’s quota of $125,000 is expected to be realized this week.

A. J. Freiman, president of the Canadian Zionists contributed $10,000, the Montreal Hadassah pledged $10,000, A. Levin, $5,000 and Robert A. Darwin, $3,000; the Bronfman Company and B. Aaron, $5,000 each; H. Leon, $2,000; S. Levinson, $1,500; the Montreal Junior Hadassah, $1,000 and the Zionist Order, Habonim, $4,500.

A. Levin and R. A. Darwin are the Dominion campaign chairmen.

Dr. Schmarya Levin and Mrs. Archibald Silverman were the principal speakers at the banquet. A. J. Freiman, A. Levin, Dr. Herman Abramowitz and Louis Fitch also addressed the gathering.

At a mass meeting held in the afternoon addressed by Dr. Schmarya Levin and Mrs. Silverman, $2,000 was subscribed.
