A suit for damages entered against the Consistoire Juif of France by Cantor Jacob Katz, who was dismissed from his post on the allegation that he married a non-Jewess, concluded here today.
Cantor Katz seeks damages in the amount of 100,000 francs. The decision will be announced within a week.
Cantor Katz claims that his wife adopted the Jewish faith but is unable to prove that a Jewish marriage ceremony was performed.
The Consistoire holds however that even if the wife adopted the Jewish faith, Katz as a Cohan is not permitted to marry a convert because Cohanim constitute a noble Jewish caste.
