Cardinal Don Vincente Scherer of Porto Allegre assured a Jewish delegation today that he would give his full support to the Jewish request to the forthcoming Ecumenical Council to delete anti-Jewish expressions from all Catholic texts.
The delegation of the Confederation of Jewish Communities in Brazil handed the Cardinal a memorandum asking his support for the request. The Cardinal told the delegation he supported the contents of the memorandum without reservation. He added he would immediately communicate his position to his “good personal friend,” Cardinal Bea at the Vatican, who is directing preparations for the Ecumenical Council.
