The New York Post said in a Washington dispatch today that Supreme court Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo was understood to have informed associates that he did not expect his health to permit further active se vice on the bench. Mr. Cardozo, who is 68 years old and has been suffering from a heart ailment, will probably not return to the Supreme Court when it reconvenes in October, the dispatch said, although his formal retirement probably will be deferred until January.
