Cardozo, Warburg, Lehman Join Executive Board of Jewish Committee

The American Jewish Committee, through its secretary, Morris D. Waldman, announced that Judge Benjamin N. Cardozo, Lieutenant-Governor Herbert H. Lehman, and Felix M. Warburg, for many years members of its General Committee, have accepted election to membership on its Executive Committee to fill existing vacancies. One of these vacancies was caused by the death of Louis Marshall, an executive member since the committee’s inception twenty-three years ago and its President since 1912. As is well known, it was to the work of the American Jewish Committee, engaged in efforts to protect the Jews against infringement of their civil and religious rights, that Mr. Marshall devoted the greater part of his energies.

The election of these men is expected to strengthen substantially the efforts of the Committee in important directions. Judge Cardozo, presiding justice of the Court of Appeals of the State of New York and universally recognized as an eminent jurist, is expected, in association with other distinguished lawyers on the Committee, to be especially helpful in the legal matters with which the Committee is continuously dealing. Colonel Lehman’s experience in public affairs and in constructive post-war relief work in Eastern European countries will be serviceable in the Committee’s relations with government authorities in connection with situations involving the welfare of Jews here and abroad. Mr. Warburg’s acknowledged leadership in Jewish philanthropy, covering relief work for many years in the United States and European countries and, more recently, constructive work in Palestine, will, it is anticipated, aid the Committee in exercising an influence toward uniting the diverse elements in Jewish life, a unifying influence which Mr. Warburg has so notably effected as president of the Joint Distribution Committee and chairman of the Administrative Council of the Jewish Agency for Palestine.

The Executive Committee has received letters from many of the members expressing their sorrow at the news of Mr. Marshall’s death and emphasizing the importance of carrying on the work of the Committee with redoubled effort. The Committee has also received telegraphic messages from many national and foreign Jewish organizations expressing sympathy and offering continued cooperation, notably the Joint Foreign Committee, London; Alliance Israelite Universelle, Paris; Centralverein Deutscher Staatsbuerger Juedischen Glaubens, Berlin, and the Hilfsverein der Deutschen Juden, Berlin. Cables of sympathy were also received from other foreign organizations, among them the Central Office of Ort Verband, Berlin; Russo Jewish Community Ohel Jacob, Paris; Consistoire Israelite France, Paris; South African Jewish Board of Deputies, Jo- (Continued on Page 4)

The Annual Meeting of the American Jewish Committee will take place on Sunday, November 10th. A communication has been directed to the 175 Corporate Members of the Committee throughout the country announcing the election of these new executive members.
