Gov. Carey today signed a law prohibiting “boycott or blacklist” directed against any individual or corporation residing or doing business in New York State. This is the first such law in the United States, according to the American Jewish Congress, which had urged Carey to sign the bill.
The AJCongress said it was “gratified” by the Governor’s action. “Attempts by Arab governments to interfere with and distort American business judgements on the basis of anti-Jewish and anti-Israel prejudices are an odious denial of American traditions of religious liberty and free trade.” declared Jack M. Elkin, chairman of the AJCongress’ New York Metropolitan Council. “The new law protects and preserves those traditions.”
