Stokely Carmichael, controversial black militant leader, nominated Adolf Hitler last night as “the greatest white man” in history, on “objective” and not “moral” or “ethical” grounds. Mr. Carmichael, former chairman of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee explained on the David Frost television program that “When you talk about greatness, you don’t put ethical judgments on them. And when you talk about genius you do not put ethical or moral judgments on them.” The fact that Hitler “committed bad acts” is “not the question.” he said. Mr. Carmichael was booed and jeered by the audience. On a recent David Frost show, the noted Hungarian-born biographer Stefan Lorant. asked the most accurate one-word description of Hitler, replied: “genius.” He did not, however, use the term “great,” and the audience did not react noticeably.
