By decree of King Carol, issued last night, Rumania was today in the ranks of Europe’s one-party totalitarian states. having dissolved all political parties last February, King Carol has replaced them with a single organization to be known as the “Front of National Rebirth.”
Designed to unify the nation and to meet the situation created by Germany’s “Drangnach Osten,” the royal decree set as the goal for the new party the “mobilization” of all national efforts towards the country’s defense and economic and political progress. by stipulation of the decree, the “front of National Rebirth” is henceforth the sole party authorized to select and present candidates for all Rumanian elections. all other political activity will be regarded as subversive and those participating will be deprived of their civil rights. Membership in the party will be open to all Rumanians over 21, with the exception of the military and the judiciary.
