Former President Jimmy Carter yesterday described President Reagan’s planned Bitburg military cemetery visit next month as “a horrible mistake that will not only bring embarrassment on him and his Administration but on our country and all those who deplore in the most sincere heartfelt way, the atrocities that were committed by the SS troops under Adolf Hitler.”
“President Reagan has made a mistake, ” Carter said in a radio interview yesterday reported in The Philadelphia Inquirer today. “He ought to admit that he has done so, announce to the American people that he has changed his mind, that he’s not going to Bitburg, and I think the whole furor would be over in a few hours. ” Carter was here promoting his new book, “The Blood of Abraham.”
