The Catholic Church wants to correct the “bad history” regarding the Jewish people, and the important decree on Christian-Jewish relations, being prepared for presentation before the next session of the Ecumenical Council, will have far-reaching effects both within the Church and outside it, a leading Catholic bishop declared here last night.
The statement was made by Bishop T. Muldoon, auxiliary bishop to Cardinal Gilroy. He was the opening speaker at the winter session of lectures conducted at the Central Synagogue here.
The Church, he said, wants to point out that the Jewish people is “in no way to blame for the tragedy that happened 2, 000 years ago. ” The reference was to the charge of deicide which the draft decree before the Ecumenical Council would wipe out. “The Church, ” continued Bishop Muldoon, “feels it has an obligation to call to the mind of the Catholic people those precious things which they received from the hands of the Chosen People of Israel. The word of God, the Old Testament came from them. “
