Dr. Solomon Gaon, Sephardic chief rabbi of the British Commonwealth, attended a meeting here last night, with dignitaries of the Catholic Church and leaders of the Madrid Jewish Community, to strengthen the Spanish Association for Jewish-Christian Friendship. The association, founded several weeks ago, owes its inspiration to the steps taken by Pope John XXIII to cement friendlier relations between Catholics and Jews, the founders said.
Last night’s meeting was attended by the largest group of Catholic dignitaries to meet with Jewish leaders here since the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492. Among those present, in addition to Dr. Gaon, were Dr. Perez Serrano, a director of Ecclesia, a weekly magazine published here by the Catholic Church; Father Vincento Serrano, a prominent priest known for his interest in furthering better Judeo-Catholic relations; and Dr. Max Masin, president of the Madrid Jewish Community.
