The revised civilian edition of the Roman Catholic New Testament will be altered so that all controversial references to Jews will be omitted, the National Conference of Christians and Jews has been notified by the Right Rev. William Newton, editorial secretary of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, it was announced today.
Chief Chaplain William R. Arnold of the United States Army announced several days ago that these passages had been altered in the Army-Navy edition of the New Testament. He revealed that the change had been made many days prior to criticism of the passage from any source, as a result of interchange of opinion among chaplains of various faiths. Alteration of the civilian edition resulted from consultations between Catholic officials and staff members of the National Conference during the past five weeks.
