Rep. Emanuel Celler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has appealed to Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and the U.S. delegation to the United Nations for their support in behalf of a proposed clause in the Human Rights Covenant which provides that “children whose parents were killed in a war or other catastrophe shall be brought up in the religion of their parents.”
The proposal was put forth by Dr. Isaac Lewin, consultant to the U.N. Economic and Social Council for the Agudas Israel World Organization. The U.N. Human Rights Commission, of which Mrs. Roosevelt is chairman, will take up the proposal in the near future when the article on religious freedom in the draft covenant is discussed.
