The official report of the Hungarian census of 1920 shows that there are 473,310 Jews out of the total population of 7,606,971. According to these figures, the Jewish population shows a gain in the last decade of only 1606.
A total of 16,000 Jews abandoned Judaism during the ten years, according to the census figures. This is given officially as the reason for the small gain in population shown by the Jews. In Jewish circles, however, the explanations for the comparatively small growth is attributed to the continuous expulsion of Jews by the government.
