Centenary of Leopold Zunz School Celebrated in Berlin

The Berlin Jewish community celebrated the centenary of the Zunz School for Boys and the twenty-fifth year of office of its director, Dr. Gutmann. Representatives were present of the Prussian Ministry of Education, the organizations of Berlin and Prussian Teachers, the Brandenburg School Board, the members of the Berlin Jewish community, almost all the rabbis in Berlin and many prominent Jewish men and women in the city.

Dr. Alfred Klee, Vice-President of the Berlin Jewish community, spoke of the great honor which the school and the Berlin Jewish community enjoyed through the fact that the first director of the school was the founder of the science of Judaism. Leopohi Zune Speeches of greeting were delivered by representatives of the Prussian Government and of various public bodies both in Berlin and the provinces.

Dr. Holeman, who was director of the school between 1882 and 1900, and who is celebrating this week his 85th birthday, was given an ovation when he appeared on the platform. Dr. Gutman traced the history and outlined the future prospects of the school and its aims. He expressed thanks to the Board of the Jewish community for their presentation to him as a memento of this day of a set of the Jewish Encyclopaedia.

Dr. Gutmann has issued for the occasion a special booklet giving the history of the school since its foundation by Loopold Zune in 1926. compiled from the record of the Berlin Jewish community and constaining a great deal of material hitherto unknown.
