Australian Minister for External Affairs Herbert Evatt, who is now in London, was urged today by the Council of Australian Jewry to grant recognition to the state of Israel by the end of this month, at which time — according to the original U.N. General Assembly Palestine resolution –Israel is legally to be considered a state.
In a message signed by Maurice Ashkanasy, president of the Council’s executive, Evatt was also asked to use his good offices with British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin to secure British recognition of the Jewish state.
Record attendance marks were set yesterday at all synagogues and Jewish assembly places throughout Australia in honor of this country’s first “Israel Day.” Stressing that the establishment of the Jewish state was a fulfillment of the wish of Providence, rabbis and other speakers urged Australian Jewry to extend utmost aid to the new state.
