Zim’s new freighter “Avdat” was symbolically launched today in Castellamare di Stabi, a port near Naples. The freighter was built for Zim by an Italian construction company, “Navalmeccanica, ” which also built Avdat’s sister ship ” in Gedi. ” The launching was symbolic because of a shipyard workers’ strike which is scheduled to end Monday, thus delaying Avdat’s sailing for a few days.
The launching ceremony was carried out by Mrs. Sara Hammer, of Brooklyn, wife of Gottlieb Hammer, president of the Zim Israel Navigation Company in New York. Attending the ceremony were Dr. Wydra, head of the Zim line who praised the Italian company which built the vessel, and Signor Nardi, president of Navalmeccanica, who thanked Zim for commissioning “Avdat” and “Ein Gedi.” The Naples district commissioner and other authorities were also present at the ceremony.
