An appeal to the Israel Government to relax controls and various other restrictions on trade was voiced here last night at the international conference of bi-national Israel chambers of commerce. An appeal for United Nations action to guarantee Israel the right of free navigation of the Suez Canal was also voiced.
In a resolution, the conference called for the establishment of a free trade zone in Israel and for reduction of direct government purchases abroad. It criticized government licensing regulations and suggested the progressive relaxation of other controls, including foreign currency controls and revision of tax laws. At the same time, the chambers dedicated themselves to developing economic relations of mutual benefit and decided to establish a permanent international chamber with the center of the movement in New York and a subsidiary center in Paris. Nathan Strauss III of the U.S. was elected head of the international group.
The meeting heard a description of the activity of the Israel-American Chamber of Commerce by its president, Mr. Strauss. He told of the group’s work and stressed the fact that present controls on foreign investment in Israel was discouraging some potential investors.
