As of tomorrow many of Palestine’s Jewish householders can stop worrying about shielding their Chanukah candles so as to make them invisible from the street. The government has announced that the blackout, which has been in force here since June, 1940 when Italy entered the war, will be lifted then, with the exception of a 20-mile strip along the seacoast.

The all-Jewish city of Tel Aviv, which in pre-war days marked Chanukah with the lighting of a gigantic menorah on top of the city’s highest water tower, will still have to observe black-out regulation, since it is situated on the coast. The port city of Haifa will likewise have to maintain its blackout.
