Jews are celebrating Chanukah, the Feast of Lights, with festivities which began last night and will conclude Dec. 20. The holiday, one of the joyous occasions of the year, commemorates the rededication of the Temple by the victorious Maccabees in 167 B.C.E., following their struggle against the Syrian King Antiochus. The latter had attempted to suppress the Jewish religion.
New York City Jewry will pay homage to the memory of the victorious Maccabees at an elaborate festival to be held Saturday in Madison Square Garden. The affair, described as “Reunion in Tel Aviv”, will portray in colorful scenes the return of the Jews to Palestine.
In Brooklyn last night the Brooklyn Jewish Center was the scene of a Chanukah celebration and musicale. Proceeds of the affair went to the Infant Welfare Fund, which provides for child welfare work in Palestine.
