Former Vice President Alben W. Barkley, speaking tonight at a Chanukah festival here attended by 12,000 guests, urged the U.S. Government not to lend its support and prestige “to any effort that would curb Israel’s use of its own natural resources.” He was referring to the Jordan River dam controversy now before the United Nations Security Council.
The festival, which was arranged by the Jewish National Fund, marked the culmination of a series of Chanukah festivals in San Francisco, Seattle, Portland and other Jewish communities on the Pacific Coast, resulting in contributions of $250,000 to the Jewish National Fund. In Portland, the 500 Jewish leaders assembled at the festival raised $50,000 for the establishment of a settlement in Israel bearing the name of Ben Medofsky, former local JNF president. Bartley Crum, well-known lawyer, was one of the principal speakers at the affair.
