Austrian mistreatment of the Jews, particularly segregation of Jewish children in ghetto schools and continued dismissals of Jewish officials from federal and state service, today provoked a sharp editorial in the Manchester Guardian. The liberal English daily denounced the actions of the Austrian government as outright violations of the treaty of St. Germain, signed after the World War.
Pointing out that discrimination is being practiced against Austrian Jews in the civil service, universities, hospitals and schools, the Guardian declared: “Such a condition of affairs directly contradicts Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg’s recent Geneva statement saying that Austria does not recognize two categories of citizens and that tendentious information is being published abroad about Austria’s Jewish policy.”
