Declaring that “the court finds the policies of the Soviet Union to be an abomination,” New York City Criminal Court judge Richard Carruthers dismissed today, “in the interests of justice,” the first 42 participants in the March 5 “Operation Redemption” sit-in outside the Soviet Mission to the United Nations. The group included 33 rabbis. Nearly 200 persons were detained by police on that day. Operation Redemption is an on-going series of activities meant to bring about arrests of the protestors at Soviet offices to protest “the new spiritual genocide of Jews in Russia,” according to its sponsors, the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry and the long Island Committee for Soviet Jewry.
Those arrested in “Operation Redemption” activities were charged with disorderly conduct. After arrests, protestors were taken to precinct stations, given summonses and released on their own recognizance.
