Charges of anti-Semitism brought against Dr. Frederick J. Hauptmann, head of the German Department at the Women’s College of Rutgers University, were substantiated today by a number of witnesses before the committee of trustees of Rutgers.
Several professors, including Prof. Evelyn A. Clark and Prof. William Oncken, openly accused Dr. Hauptmann of anti-Semitism at today’s hearing. Prof. Clark, a teacher of classical languages, declared that Dr. Hauptmann defended Nazi anti-Semitism in 1933 when Hitler came into power and that he dismissed Prof. Leinard Bergel for his opposition to the Nazi propaganda conducted in the college.
“Dr. Bergel stood out in the German department as an unusual scholar,” Prof. Clark testified.
Prof. Oncken, head of the Italian department, testifying before the investigating committee, emphasized that Dr. Hauptmann, who is a German citizen, is doing all he can to ruin the careers of American citizens and those intending to become American citizens.
