A family gift of $500,000 was announced at a dinner meeting here for the Hospital Building Fund of the Jewish Federation. It was the largest gift of its kind given to the Jewish Federation by living persons in the last 20 years. A total of $2,500,000 was announced during the evening towards a goal of $3,750,000 to be used for expansion of Michael Reese Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital.
The gift of $500,000 was made by the Kaplan family in memory of their father and husband, Max S. Kaplan, who was a resident of Chicago for 50 years and built one of the largest ferrous metal businesses of its kind in the country. The family includes Mrs. Jennie M. Kaplan, the widow of Mr. Kaplan, and nine children.
