More than $3,077,000–the largest sum ever raised at a single meeting in Chicago–was raised last night at the “kick-off” dinner of Chicago’s Combined Jewish Appeal, Reuben L. Freeman, campaign general chairman announced today.
The meeting, attended by 450 leading Jewish business and professional men, heard a stirring appeal by movie actor Edward G. Robinson, who has just returned from Israel. Mr. Robinson spoks of Israel’s phenomenal achievements and called the Jewish state “a land of hope and hardship.”
“The greatness of Israel,” he declared, “lies in something beyond its independence. It is in brotherhood–not the brotherhood of an embattled people–but one of a people who despite all obstacles stretch out their hands of aid even to their foes. The people live in an uneasy truce. There is hunger and privation, but they have chosen by an act of collective will to double their obligations to their brethren.”
