Rabbi Raphael Ankawa, chief rabbi of Sale, Morocco, died early this month at the age of 87 in Sale, it was revealed here today by Isaac E. Edrehi.
He was chief rabbi of that city since 1880. In 1918 the French government named him president of the Haut Tribunal Rabbinique and in 1929 decorated the rabbi with the cross of the chevalier, of the Legion of Honor.
He was the descendant of a Spanish-Jewish family and descended directly from Rabbi Israel Ankawa of Toledo, Spain, who was burned at the stake by the Inquisition in 1400.
