Dr. Elio Toaff, the Chief Rabbi of Rome, called today the declaration on Jews adopted provisionally last Friday by the Ecumenical Council a good one and cited particularly the absolution of all Jews, past and present, from the charge of deicide in the crucifixion of Christ. He also mentioned the quotations in the declaration from the Prophets.

He said the placement of the declaration within the wider frame of reference of a declaration on non-Christian religions reflected in a “well-balanced way” the entity in itself of the Jewish religion. He termed the large majority for the declaration in the voting “highly satisfactory” and giving hope for approval at the next and final session of the Council.
