Jewish children in France whose parents have been deported by the Nazi occupational authorities to unknown destinations in eastern Europe, are reported in the Swiss press today to be wandering along the highways begging for bread in villages and lacking clothing, shoes and shelter.
Swiss newspapers today also report that a Pole has been sentenced to death in Nazi-held Poland for selling his meat ration to a Jew. Two more Poles were sentenced to six years at hard labor each for giving food to starving Jewish families.
The Gardista, organ of the fascist Hlinka Guard in Slovakia, which reached here today reports that hospitals in Bratislava are being raided to discover whether Jews are “hiding there to escape deportation by posing as patients,” In one hospital “several Jews were discovered” the report states. The paper demands heavy punishment for both Jews and those who shelter them. It also complains that in the eastern part of Slovakia Jews are still allowed to enter restaurants and cinemas.
