Plans for a permanent council of Jews and Christians in El Paso were formed here yesterday at the conclusion of meetings called by an executive secretary of the Federal Council of Churches. Six Christian denominations and the Reform temple participated in the meetings and the local Roman Catholic bishop is to be invited to the next meeting.
When Rabbi Samuel Goldenson of Pittsburgh addressed the union service here last Thanksgiving Day, Reverend Tucker, a prominent Southern Methodist, led a revolt and refused to sit on the platform as other Christian ministers did. On another occasion, Dr. Tucker has also denounced the local rabbi in pulpit and press.
Yesterday through a personal invitation of the Federal Council of Churches, Dr. Tucker met the El Paso rabbi face to face for the first time. After a discussion it was Dr. Tucker who moved that regular meetings to be held at which Christians and Jews can learn more about each other.
During the last two months, cities in Missouri, Colorado, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona and Texas have initiated permanent local councils to cultivate understanding and better relationships between Christian and Jews. These councils will be linked with similar groups in the East through the National Conference of Jews and Christians in New York.
