Christians closed their churches Tuesday in Nazareth as some young men patrolled the streets with clubs in response to clashes earlier in the week with Muslim residents of the Galilee town. At least seven people were injured in the clashes, which came amid demonstrations by Muslims seeking to build a mosque near the holiest Christian site in Israel’s largest Arab town. Meanwhile, Israeli officials are attempting to mediate discussions regarding the site, which the mayor of Nazareth says belongs to Israel, but which the Muslim protesters claim is theirs.
