The Commission on World Concerns of the Canadian Council of Churches has urged Prime Minister Joe Clark to hold off a decision to move the Canadian Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem because it would be prejudicial and unhelpful.
In a letter also sent to External Affairs Minister Flora MacDonald, the Protestant group official Donald Anderson wrote, “For Canada now to move the embassy to Jerusalem would be to prejudge in Israel’s favor, one of the most difficult of issues that must be settled by negotiated compromise.”
He recommended that Clark delay the move until the Prime Minister has had a full opportunity to review all ramifications of such a move. It is already clear, he said, that Jerusalem’s status will be one of the most contentious issues to face Israeli and Egyptian negotiators.
