Cries of “Shame” and “Blatant prejudice” from some members of his own church greeted the Rev. Donald Stirling here when he charged the United Jewish Appeal with using the church as a “whipping boy to stimulate enthusiasm in their cause.” The Rev. Stirling, chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Toronto Conference of the United Church of Canada, spoke at a session of the conference. The United Church leadership has often condemned Israeli policy and practices. UJA officials here said their campaign and speakers have not referred to the church’s stand. The conference reiterated Its “unequivocal” support of “the right of Israel to exist” but repeated its call for Israeli withdrawal from captured Arab territories. The conference also acknowledged “the church’s share of the responsibility for periodic deterioration of (Christian-Jewish) relations.”
