The role of the Israel Institute of Technology in training technicians for development of the resources of the Middle East region was praised here last night in a cable from Sir Winston Churchill who is currently vacationing on the Riviera. The message was sent to a dinner in honor of Sir Winston tendered by the British Technion Society.
The cable read: “The peaceful development of the resources of the Middle East is essential for all who live there, and projects for training technicians for this purpose are most highly to be commended.” Sir Winston was represented at the dinner by his son, Randolph Churchill, who will also attend next week’s ceremonies at Technion City, on the slopes of Mt. Carmel outside Haifa, to lay the cornerstone for the Churchill Auditorium honoring Britain’s elder statesman.
Hugh Gaitskell, Chancellor of the Exchequer in the last Labor Government, and a featured speaker at last night’s affair, asserted that it was impossible not to view with “considerable anxiety” the latest developments in the Middle East. He expressed the hope that the dangers facing Israel–“the most advanced social democracy in the world”–would be averted and that Israel “would go from strength to strength.”
Dr. Pinchas Rosen, Israel Minister of Justice, hailed Sir Winston and other friends of Israel in Britain, and spoke of the need to “impress” upon all of Israel’s friends the urgent necessity for understanding the “dangerous situation which has been created in the Middle East and for our friends to do everything to assist in safeguarding the security of Israel.”
