“Valeurs Actuelles,” a usually well-informed weekly, claimed today that CIA chief Richard Helms suggested during his recent visit to Jerusalem that Israel should be associated in some form with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). According to the magazine, Helms said the U.S. regards Israel as “an alternative” to Cyprus should the latter fall under Soviet influence. The magazine also claimed that the Algerian regime was in direct contact with the Moroccan plotters who tried to overthrow King Hassan II ten days ago. “Valeurs Actuelies” is described as a right-of-center pro-government news magazine.
