The 115-member Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra today arrived in Beirut, Lebanon, and found itself accused of “Zionism” and the subject of a raging controversy over whether it will be allowed to play at the Baalbek Festival tomorrow.
The American orchestra was denounced because it is scheduled to tour Israel for a week after its performance in Lebanon. Newspapers demanded that the orchestra be banned. Three members of the Lebanese Parliament requested a formal explanation. U. S. diplomats in Beirut are observing the situation as it develops.
