The first shipment of this year’s citrus crop to leave Palestine will start for Britain tomorrow when a freighter loaded with 30,000 cases of grapefruit weighs anchor at Haifa. The cargo is expected to be unloaded and distributed throughout the British Isles before Christmas.
Palestinian experts predict that the citrus industry will be well on its way to complete recovery this season with the export of 6,500,000 cases to Britain and more than 3,000,000 cases to Sweden, Holland and other European countries. It is estimated that some $80,000,000 is invested in the industry and that 20,000 families draw their livelihood from it in Palestine alone.
